Dr. Nandi’s research focuses on experimental nuclear structure studies using gamma-ray spectroscopy techniques. Nuclear structure information is essential for understanding complex many-body quantum systems composed of protons and neutrons. Such data play a crucial role in nuclear astrophysics, neutrino physics, reactor decay heat calculations, and efforts to prevent nuclear weapons proliferation. The current activities include-

  • Experiments primarily conducted at three accelerator facilities in India: Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), and Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC).
  • Operation and handling of different types of semiconductor detectors (HPGe) for gamma-ray detection. These detectors provide excellent energy resolution and are well suited for discrete gamma-ray spectroscopy.
  • Use of fast scintillator detectors to measure nuclear level lifetimes in the range of around 10 pico-second to 1 nano-second.
  • Beta-decay studies of deformed nuclei using HPGe detector arrays to establish detailed Beta-decay schemes.
  • Beta-decay investigations employing highly efficient scintillator detectors using the Total Absorption Gamma-ray Spectroscopy (TAGS) method to address the well-known Beta-decay pandemonium effect.
