Dr. Raut primarily works in the area of gamma-ray spectroscopy for studies in nuclear structure and dynamics along with developments in the practicing methodologies. He has been one of the principal resource persons for the use of digital pulse processing in gamma-ray spectroscopy and has spearheaded the conceptualization and implementation of a digital pulse processing and data acquisition system for the experimental programme of INGA (Indian National Gamma Array) at VECC, Kolkata. The facility has been used in several experiments by research groups from across the country, and has produced physics results of significance and impact. Dr. Raut’s developments include software frameworks for handling and reduction of multi-parameter data typically acquired in gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements using large detector arrays. One of his key pursuits has been to transform the methodology of nuclear level lifetime measurements using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) and the resulting development has facilitated the applicability of the technique in expanded experimental scenarios. The new framework has provisioned lifetime measurements with reduced uncertainties as stringent validation for varied excitation phenomena observed in the experiments. The research interests of Dr. Raut also includes application of gamma-ray spectroscopy in broader contexts. He has worked on reaction cross-section measurements of medically relevant radioisotopes, using the activation technique, as well as on the measurement of natural radioactivity, as present in the environmental samples.
